Virtualbox installation instructions: install a Windows XP virtual machine, pre-configured for GCMS data processing
Note: This will not work for newer Apple computers that use the M1 processor. Virtualization and dual-boot basically went away when Apple stopped using Intel processors. Virtualization will evenutally come back as developers develope the needed software but for now it does not work.
For Windows 10 based computers Windows Sandbox and Hyper-V must be turned off
- Do a search for Windows Features and uncheck Windows Sandbox and Hyper-V if they are checked
- restart computer twice after turning off Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox before proceeding
For Windows/Linux Host PC's make sure virtualization is turned on in the BIOS (press F2 at boot to go into the motherboard bios) - this will be very computer/vendor specific, come find the Director of Instrumentation for help if needed
Download and install Virtualbox
- Virtualbox can be downloaded here: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
- Choose the host download for the type of computer you're currently using, for example if you're currently using a Mac choose OS X host
Install the WindowsXP with GCMS guest
Download the guest operating system appliance (windowsXPGCMS.ova) here
Launch Virtualbox
- In the Tools area of the application right-click on Import Appliance...
- A dialog box will open up. Click on the folder icon at the end of the File line and then select the guest operating system appliance file you downloaded earlier
- Click Continue then Import
Attach you data host data directory to your guest operating system
- This will allow your Windows XP virtual machine to access GCMS data on your host computer. The folder will be seen as an additional drive on your Windows XP virtual machine.
- Right click on your newly created windowsXPGCMS vitual machine in Virtualbox and select Settings...
- On the Dialog Window that pops up click on Shared Folders
- There is already one entry there. Select and delete it by clicking on the third folder icon on the right hand side
- Add a new share by clicking on the top of the three folders to the right
- In the new dialog box set the folder path to the path where your GCMS data is stored on your local drive
- Check the automount option and then click OK.
- Then click OK to close the setting dialog box
- You should be ready to run now. Select your windowsXPGCMS virtual machine in Virtual Box and click start.
- If you want, you can delete the windowsXPGXMS.ova file now. It is no longer needed after installation.
